Subject: Cue The Violins!
This heart rendering story features a cop visiting an old woman who has recieved reports that the old woman hasn't been heard from in a couple of days. As he enters, the old woman and the cop enter into a godawful stagey acting play trying to gain our sympathy. Soon, the cop starts talking about how the city (that being St Louis) can help her through the Community Chest, which sponsors many many worthwile programs. After that speech, the camera makes such a close up on the woman that you just KNOW she'll up and talk to the camera directly, which she DOES! She too crams the guilt down our throats. All in all, quite a guilt prodding production.

Subject: Always on Call
A policeman visits a sick old lady and tries to get her to accept help from the Community Chest. This gives him a chance to give a spiel that's really designed to get all the audience members to give to the Community Chest. Still, this is a charming film with a message that's not too heavy-handed, focusing on all the good the charity does. This was filmed in St. Louis and it gives you a nice historical snapshot of that city's social services during the 40s.
